What exercises can I do to help loose weight from my hips and butt?

I've had two kids. I lost the pregnancy weight and am actually wearing smaller sized clothes than I was before I had the kids. My biggest problem now, and always has been, my butt and hips. I have to buy pants in a certain size to fit over my hips and around my butt, but they gap around my stomach. What kinds of exercises can I do to help this problem? I enjoy walking outside when the weather is warm, but I can't seem to get into anything when it's so cold. Can someone please give me some advice?

Congratulations on staying committed to your health after the birth of your children. Although spot reduction not something that we can facilitate with diet and exercise, it is important to stay consistent with physical activity in order to reach weight loss goals. In order to tone up and trim down, a combination of cardiovascular activity along with strength training is important. This combination will help you to lose fat mass while also maintaining your muscles mass in order to facilitate a greater amount of calories burned throughout the day. Try to incorporate full body strength training exercises for increased calorie expenditure, and depending on your current fitness level, you may try adding short bursts of speed to your cardiovascular activity. This type of interval training will help to promote greater calorie burn both during and after your workout. Implementing exercises like body weight squats, lunges, and step ups will also help to tone those areas to keep them firm and strong as you lose weight. Because you had problems losing weight in specific areas before, genetically, this is where you may be predisposed to store fat. So as you continue to lose weight, you will be more likely to lose it from other areas first, but stay committed and eventually you will see the changes you desire.
