When it comes to building fitness, burning calories, and working up a healthy sweat, any kind of cardio equipment will get the job done. The specific types best for you depend on your goals, physical abilities, resources, and preferences. For example, if you’re training for your first 10K run, it makes sense to include treadmill running in your exercise plan. If you want a total body workout, choose an elliptical, a cross-country ski machine, or a rowing machine. If you have knee or hip problems, you may be more comfortable using a recumbent stair climber or bicycle.

No matter what kind of cardio equipment you use, you’ll determine the quality of your workout by how much effort you put into it. Try several different types, and find two or three that are easy to use and enjoyable — because, ultimately, the best kind of cardio equipment is the kind that you’ll keep on using.
