Is there any research that supports eating based on your blood type?

At the present time, there doesn’t appear to be any professional, scientific evidence that supports the claim that appropriate nutrition should center around one’s specific blood type.

Despite the lack of sufficient scientific data to back up the claims of the popular book “Eat Right For Your Type” by James D’Adamo, there may be a couple of key points made by the author that we find universally helpful in the battle of the bulge. First is the notion that when it comes to diets, we need to break away from the “one size fits all” approach. This alone is particularly important when we consider individual energy needs, disease states, and of course tastes and preferences. Another concept the author touches on is the classification of foods as highly beneficial, neutral or avoid. Regardless of the actual food designation claims cited in the book, there are certain foods as dietitians that we like to encourage such as fruits/vegetables, fat-free/low-fat dairy and whole grains; and conversely those foods or food components that we advise limiting like trans-fats, excess sodium, or refined grains. Having a sort of classification system is useful to some individuals looking to make better choices in their diet. A scientifically supported publication that’s particularly helpful for this purpose is titled Dietary Guidelines For Americans 2010. It’s available free of charge online in a PDF format. It’s published jointly by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In this publication you will find many of the key recommendations for the general public as well as specific groups of interest laid out in an easy to read chapter format. There are also helpful appendices at the end that offer ways to help you select foods based on nutrient content, education around reading food labels, and practical strategies for achieving better overall health.
